Exmouth library is to close until March 1 while new self-service kisoks are installed. Devon County Council said the work was part of a county-wide project to modernise the library service.

Exmouth library users can from next month check out their own books thanks to a new self-service system being installed next week.

The library, in Exeter Road, closes on Wednesday February 15 until 9am on Thursday March 1, while the self-service technology is fitted.

Devon County Council said installing new kiosks would make borrowing quicker, because residents could check out their own books without queuing at the main desk.

Library staff will be on hand to show book borrowers how to use the new equipment once it is up and running.

Exmouth library will also have Wifi installed when the self-service kiosks are fitted.

The county council said the introduction of the new technologies was part of a county-wide project to modernise the library service.

Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council cabinet member with responsibility for the library service, said: “This new technology is helping our library service become much faster and more efficient.

“Self service kiosks have already been installed in fourteen libraries across Devon, and are proving a hit with borrowers, both young and old.

“It is excellent news that we are investing in the library in Exmouth, and this new simple technology will be hugely beneficial to improving the library service experience for our residents.”

Devon County Council is making allowances of the closure period by allowing residents to borrow extra books.

Items can be renewed online or by calling 0845 155 1001.

They can also be borrowed, renewed or returned at any county council library. The nearest libraries are at Budleigh Salterton and Topsham.
