Scheme launched to revamp church

Otterton residents have been invited to get on board with plans to transform the village’s church into a community hub.

The St Michael’s Parish and Community Endeavour (SPACE) project was officially launched at the village’s Mad Hatters event, giving villagers the chance to find out more about the plans.

Information was on display about the £620,000 bid for funding - firstly to repair the church’s roof, and then to re-order the church to create a facility from which the community can benefit, including potential use by village groups and Otterton Primary School, as well as to meet demand from worshippers.

Appeal chairman Malcolm Crabtree and the Reverend Anne Charlton answered questions.

Mrs Charlton said: “There was a lot of interest, which was really good news. Several people took away standing order forms. What we’re trying to encourage people to do is just think about paying five or ten pounds a month, and that way we will get the funds we need to do the work. It was very positive, and we collected more than £1,100 in contributions on the day.”
