Exmouth Rowing Club, struggling to how to stretch their £50,000 grant to achieve the clubhouse of their dreams, has been helped out by a generous local contractor.

Exmouth Plumb Centre has been giving the club a helping hand.

Earlier this year the club took on the former RNLI Boat house and have been given a grant to give the old building a makeover.

After three months non-stop volunteer labour, the build is fast approaching the installation of new toilets, showers, and a disabled suite.

But equipping these new facilities will cost more than £2,000.

Manager of Exmouth Plumb Centre’s Darren Smale said: “We heard of the club’s fantastic efforts and decided to lend a hand.

“It’s been our pleasure to make sure they get everything they need. Call it a donation, if you like. We wish them nothing but success.”

Club secretary, Les Norcliffe, said: “I can’t tell you what a difference this makes. “To get that kind of support from a locally-based business is exactly what a club like ours needs. This is what the word community should be about.”

Both Darren and Matt Berry (also pictured) are eager to take advantage of the club’s offer of free taster rows on Sunday mornings.

Club Captain, Mike Drew said: “They’re both big lads. Right build. Right age. Right attitude. We can teach them the basics in no time at all. And the Rio Olympics are only two years away!”
