Exmouth RNLI searched the River Exe for a ‘vulnerable’ missing man on Tuesday morning. A man’s body was later discovered in the water at Countess Wear by a group of kayakers.

Exmouth RNLI was tasked to search for a missing man whose body was later discovered in the River Exe on Tuesday lunchtime.

The inshore lifeboat was launched shortly before 11am for crew to search for a vulnerable man from Exeter, reported missing in the early hours of the morning.

The three-man crew, from Exmouth, made a shoreline search of the river from Shelley beach to Countess Wear, Exeter.

The search was called off when the body of man was discovered by kayakers at around noon on Tuesday, in water close to the Tally Ho! pub, at Countess Wear.

Police said the man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

RNLI helmsman Charles Swales said: “We carried out the search as far as we could. When we ran out of water at the bridge at Countess Wear, we came back down with the tide, retracing our steps for a secondary search.”

A Devon and Cornwall police spokesperson said: “Emergency services were called to the River Exe near to the Tally Ho!, where a group of kayakers had found a body.

“Ambulance staff attended but the man was declared dead at the scene. His body has been recovered by the fire service and removed by the undertaker.”
