Paedophile Andrew Rodger, from Exmouth, has been jailed for admitting historic sex abuse against a 12-year-old girl.

A paedophile retired Exmouth lifeboatman is likely to die in prison after he was jailed for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl.

Andrew Rodger, aged 58, from Littleham, is suffering from advanced Parkinson’s Disease and has been told he may have only months to live.

The retired engineer was jailed for three years and nine months after he admitted abusing a 12-year-old girl more than a decade ago.

Rodger, who served HM Coastguard for 30 years and Exmouth RNLI as deputy launching authority for five years, retiring in 2011, is already serving a three year jail sentence for exposing himself last year to two schoolgirls in Exmouth.

Exeter Crown Court heard Rodger’s latest victim only found the courage to go to the police after learning he had been jailed.

She revealed how he had sexually assaulted her more than ten years ago, when she was a 12-year-old.

Rodger, of Maer Road, Exmouth, admitted two offences of indecent assault and was jailed for a further three years and nine months by Judge Phillip Wassall.

The Judge told him: “These assaults followed what might be regarded as grooming. The effect on the victim has been predictably catastrophic and more so than in many cases because this occurred at a critical time in her education.

“I give you credit for pleading guilty and take into account your serious medical condition and its effect on your life expectancy.”

Miss Emily Pitts, prosecuting, said the victim had kept silent at the time of the assaults and only told her mother six years later.

She had not gone to the police for a further five years until last year when she made a video recorded statement telling how Rodger had touched her sexually.

The court heard the victim had made an impact statement explaining how the abuse had blighted her life in the years since and how her schoolwork had suffered at the time because of the trauma of the abuse and the strain of concealing it.

Mr Lee Bremridge, defending, said Rodger only started offending after his character and personality were affected by the onset of Parkinson’s Disease, which has now confined him to a wheelchair.

Mr Bemridge said: “As a result of his actions he has lost his home, his possessions, his friends and his family. His condition is still deteriorating.

“In 2000 he was given a life expectancy of 15 to 20 years but his position is such that he is going to spend the remaining years of his life serving this custodial sentence.”

Rodger was jailed for three years in November 2013 after he admitted exposing himself to two girls who he had stalked in his car through the streets of Exmouth as they walked home from school.

The girls, aged ten and 11, were terrified after Rodger pulled up beside them exposing himself from the driver’s seat of his car.

In January 2013, Rodger was jailed for eight weeks, with a two-year supervision requirement, after pleading guilty to eight counts of downloading indecent images of children for his personal use.

Rodger admitted downloading six indecent photographs of children - two showed a baby,

He also pleaded guilty to possessing two prohibited images of a child, downloading an indecent image of an 11-year-old girl and another indecent image of a girl aged around eight years old.
