A pair of Exmouth vintage car enthusiasts turned back time over the weekend and persuaded 135 people from all round the world to relive a classic race from 80 years ago.

Pauline and Tony Stott with Nick Lloyd are pictured on Sunday with their classic Riley vehicles. The blue car is a 1932 Gamecock while the blue vehicle is a 1933 Riley Lynx. Councillor Pauline Stott, her husband Tony and their family are proud owners of a number of classic Rileys - a famous British car from a bygone era.

This is a special year for Rileys; in 1934 three out of the four trophies were won by Team GB on the famous Le Mans Bugatti track.

All six cars completed the course.

Pauline and Tony, members of the Riley Register, an enthusiasts club, persuaded 54 owners from Australia, Scotland and France to make it to Le Mans in what was the largest reunion of Rileys outside the UK ever seen.

She said: “It was all was going well until the fuel pump of Nick Lloyd’s 1933 Riley Lynx from Lympstone decided to give up the ghost on the Mulsane Straight.

“Thanks to Mike Overfield-Collins, from Crediton, a change of fuel pump was completed in just 12 minutes – a probable record set for the speed change.”

Despite the slippery conditions, only one of the cars, an Alpine Gamecock, spun on the infamous Arnage Corner, spinning 360 degrees before continuing to on to complete the lap.

As part of the weekend, classic Rileys were on display and she said it was ‘an honour’ for one of their cars to be displayed alongside one of the original cars, a TT Sprite, which had raced in 1935.

Pauline added that their club won the Conours of Club Grande d’ Prix trophy out of 160 clubs taking part.

“This was a great honour in this the 60th anniversary of the Riley Register (their club) being formed. Of all the 135 people that went all the cars are now safely back home; most of the cars were nearly all pre-war, dating from 1929.

“We must have completed 1,800 miles during the week – not bad for an 80-year-old car!”
