New publication will feature well known characters and civic VIPs from Seaton and Axmouth over the past 60 years

SEATON and Axmouth’s “finest” are featured in a new book to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Historians Ted Gosling and Mike Clement have compiled the picture-led publication, spotlighting the area’s well known characters over the past six decades.

Said Mr Gosling: “The idea for the book was inspired by a 1897 publication by Seaton photographer George Barton who assembled all the local men for a souvenir booklet to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

“Looking at that I thought it would be a good idea to do a diamond jubilee book celebrating our present queen and all the notable people of Seaton and Axmouth between 1952 and the present day. I have concentrated on the Seaton people and Mike has done Axmouth.”

Many of the pictures for the new book, which is to be published by History Press in May, have been supplied by veteran East Devon photographer Colin Bowerman.

Mr Gosling said they were delighted to have been give access to the work of “Seaton’s premier photographer for the past 30 years” and were dedicating the book to him.

The joint authors also praised their typist and proof reader Helen Newbury.
