School children returned from their festive break shocked to find that their classroom had been transformed into an Antarctic base-camp.

Class-three children at Otterton Primary School spent the first part of the morning exploring tents, base camps, maps, harnesses, sledges and ropes, and trying to work out what their new topic might be about.

Teacher, Miss Joules, explained about ‘The Coldest Journey’- West Country adventurer Ranulph Fiennes’ mission to complete the first ever winter crossing of the harshest continent on earth - the Antarctic.

She said: “The children were so excited and asked many questions about his journey, animals, life, science, the South Pole and other famous explorers which will now form the starting point for their learning this term.”
