‘Proud’ Kathy receives British Empire Medal

An East Budleigh woman who worked for more than a decade to save historic Salem Chapel says she feels ‘very proud’ to have received the British Empire Medal.

Kathy Moyle, of Brookfield Road, received the honour in the Queen’s New Year Honours list, and has now collected the award from the Lord Lieutenant of Devon at County Hall.

Kathy received the award for services to the chapel, having campaigned on its behalf following its closure in 1993.

Having got its listed building status upgraded from Grade II to Grade II*, and run a fundraising campaign with the support of the Historic Chapels Trust, she was rewarded for her efforts when it finally reopened in 2006, and now serves as chairman of its committee.

She said: “I was very proud to receive the award. My sons were there, and my granddaughter, and my husband, and you suddenly realise what an honour it is.”

Kathy received her medal at a ceremony with six others, and says that hearing about their achievements brought home to her what an honour it was.

“Everyone who got one of these seemed to have worked very hard. It’s not for working just for a short time, it’s for a long time in the community. I felt very proud to be among those people, and I feel greatly honoured by the people that nominated me.”

Having received her BEM, Kathy is also entitled to attend one of the Queen’s garden parties at Buckingham Palace, which she will be attending on June 10.
