Blood donors from Exmouth who have selflessly given at least 75 times have had their efforts recognised at a ceremony.

A trio of lifesavers from Exmouth have been thanked for their dedication to donating blood.

Michael Evershed, Maureen Martin and Derek Williams were each presented with crystal awards at a blood donation ceremony held at Bickleigh Castle, in Tiverton,

The stalwart donors had each donated at least 75 times, helping those in need.

Derek Williams first gave blood more than 40 years ago, in 1963, in Australia.

His donation dedication continued on his return to the UK in 1996. He has clocked up 75 donations.

Maureen Martin, who has also donated 75 times, began giving blood in 1967 at the age of 19, while she was studying to become a PE teacher at Chelsea College, in Eastbourne.

“I have been fortunate in that neither I nor anyone that I am close to has ever needed blood but I still continue to donate,” she said.

Mum-of-four Melanie Smart, from Upottery, near Honiton, whose life was saved after receiving 28 pints of blood following the birth of her fourth child, praised the ‘inspirational’ donors.

She said: “I am indebted to those blood donors that took the time out of their day to donate and I can’t say thank you enough. Without them, my four children would not have had a mother.

“Following my need for blood, my older children all decided to become blood donors at age 17 and I am so proud of them.

“I can only hope that they go on to reach the milestones that these donors have reached here.”

Jonathan Sewell, lead donor relations manager at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “These ceremonies are a great way for us to give something back to our blood donors.

“Taking time to donate your blood is one of the most selfless and generous things you can do to help others and the effects of blood donation can be seen every day.”

● Anyone wanting to donate for the first time should be aged between 17-65, weighing at least 50 kg (seven stone 12lbs) and in general good health. If you’ve donated before, you can start again up to your 70th birthday and there is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.
