A spate of burglaries in East Devon has prompted police to warn residents to check outbuildings and sheds for signs of theft or trespass.

A spate of burglaries in Woodbury and Lympstone has prompted police to urge residents to check possessions left stored in outbuildings and sheds.

Officers are investigating 16 burglaries across East Devon, also including the Ottery St Mary, Whimple and West Hill areas, where sheds, garages and outbuildings have been targeted.

Police said offenders have forced locks and taken gardening and building tools, vehicle parts, bicycles and fuel.

People are being urged by Devon and Cornwall police to check for any trace of trespassers or signs of theft.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone with information about the burglaries, or from anyone who has been offered for sale the type of equipment stored in sheds and outbuildings.

PC Rob Poole said: “I would request members of the public who live in rural and semi-rural locations to check their sheds and outbuildings regularly for any sign of trespassing or theft.

“If residents see any suspicious activity, then they should inform the police.”

• Devon and Cornwall police carried out a warrant in the Exeter area where large numbers of suspected stolen items were seized.

Police said two men from Exeter, aged 24 and 26 years, were arrested and have been released on bail until 12 June, 2013.
