The large police presence spotted in Exmouth in the middle of last week were student officers being shown the finer points of community policing.
For several days, 20 student officers, from Devon and Cornwall Police’s HQ in Middlemoor, were honing their community policing skills by interacting with the public as part of their training.
The officers included PCSOs and Special Constables looking to become fully-fledged police officers.
Under the watchful eye of supervising officers, they had to take part in a series of scenarios.
These ranged from incidents like speeding, public order offences and young people drinking.
Inspector Antonia Weeks said: “The public may have seen quite a large police presence on Exmouth’s streets.
“There is nothing to be alarmed about, it is our latest batch of student police.
“They were out and about, taking part in pre-staged scenarios which helps them gain experience of being in the public view and getting used to interacting with the public.”
