The incident took place on February 3, as the train passed through Exeter.

PC Lennard Knott, investigating officer, said: “The victim, who was travelling on an Exmouth to Paignton service, placed his green backpack on the overhead luggage rack.

“Shortly after he got off the train at Exeter Central station, at about 9.36am, he realised he had left his luggage behind. The train had already departed so he reported it to staff at the station.

“The train was checked when it arrived at Exeter St Davids station a few minutes later but the man’s backpack was missing from the luggage rack.

“After reviewing CCTV images and speaking to witnesses, I would now like to identify and speak to the man in these photographs as I believe he will have key information which can assist police.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police for free by calling 0800 405040, or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Callers should quote incident reference B6/WWA of 11/03/2013.
