Cyclists could soon find it easier to whizz in and out of Woodbury after plans were announced to link the village to the Exe Estuary Trail.
The proposal is for what is described as an ‘on-road’ signed cycle route that would leave Woodbury at the crossroads at the top of Globe Hill.
From there it would proceed along the back lanes to Ebford and drop down to link up with the existing Estuary Trail south of Topsham.
Devon County Council says its local members and Woodbury Parish Council have expressed support for the scheme, and it is now set to be considered by the East Devon Highways and Traffic Orders Committee in June.
Bernard Hughes, the county councillor for Halsdon and Woodbury, said: “There will be alterations to the [Ebford] road junction to make it safer, and at the top of Globe Hill. It won’t be closed to cars, but they are mainly category C roads that are not used very much – probably only by local traffic.
“My personal view is that it’s excellent. I think really what could now happen, from a tourism point of view, is that villages like Woodbury should be on the tourism map – so anyone using the Exe Estuary Trail can go and find some of these lovely villages that surround the Exe estuary.
“Hopefully people having a meal and so on in a place like Woodbury would benefit the village.”
Cllr Hughes added that the scheme could see the speed limit at the top of Globe Hill reduced from 40mph to 30mph, which he would welcome.
