Plan ‘nonsense’

As so many local inhabitants will know, and especially whose who read the excellent article “Floodgates are open” on page 15 of the Journal (January 31), East Devon District Council has made a total nonsense of local planning.

Briefly, the council’s last plan expired in 2011 and it does not expect to produce another for approximately a year!

This means that developers virtually have a free hand to build many houses even where they are not wanted by local parish councils, as was shown in the recent inspector’s approval of 500 new houses at Ottery St Mary.

It will be remembered that five or so years ago when EDDC finally gave approval for circa 6,000 houses at Cranbrook (with a starting area of circa 2,000) that EDDC also said that this would mean that no more development need be made in any parishes as the “Land Bank” would well cover the 5,000 (or slightly plus) figure ordered by Government.

However, EDDC has now (for no obvious good reason) placed Cranbrook in a special independent “Western category” and the remainder of East Devon in a separate category open to development – Why?

The above means that EDDC must at once take action to:

a)Show that EDDC has a “Land Bank” of 6,000 houses and not 2,000;

b)Treat the whole of East Devon as one;

c)Start the development of the remaining area of Cranbrook – 4,000 houses – as soon as possible.

We sincerely hope that EDDC will act now to try to overcome the errors of its past!
