Coastguards are warning the public to check tide times after a pensioner and his grandson were airlifted from cliffs at Budleigh Salterton when they became trapped by the rising tide.

A holidaying pensioner and his young grandson were airlifted to safety after the rising tide trapped them on cliffs at Budleigh Salterton.

The 68-year-old man and his grandson, who were staying at Sandy Bay, last week tried to scale the 200-foot cliffs to escape the high spring tide as they walked from Budleigh back to their holiday camp.

They were rescued from a ledge 150ft above sea level off Littleham Cove, near to where they were staying.

Exmouth coastguard managed to reach the pair with cliff rescue equipment and remained with them until they were plucked to safety by the RNAS Culdrose helicopter crew.

Ros Evans, Portland coastguard watch manager, said: “All of these incidents could have been avoided, if people check the tides.

“We currently have high spring tides at the moment, and we have also had several areas where the cliff structure is changing due to the natural effects of the weather.

“We would remind anyone going on a visit to the beach, to make sure they check the tide times and heed any warning signs relevant to the area they are visiting. Areas of the coast that have a history of unstable cliffs have warning signs displayed for that reason.

“Please make sure you if you are visiting these areas, that you read them and understand what they mean.”
