An Exmouth pensioner with learning difficulties says he is now scared to go out and walk the dog after being in collision with a car.

Dennis Gooding, 69, of Exeter Road, was crossing the road at the top of Gypsy Lane last Wednesday afternoon when the accident happened.

And now his carers, Margaret and Raymond Slade are urging county highways chiefs to install a pedestrian crossing.

Dennis was returning from Phear Park with Jake, a Staffordshire bull terrier, and was crossing near the traffic lights from the community college side.

He was halfway across when he was knocked to the ground as a result of the collision.

He suffering a damaged right arm and head injuries and was treated by paramedics before being taken to the RD&E - Jake was unharmed.

Dennis insists he is always careful when crossing the road and said: “I looked both ways, and I couldn’t see anything coming and I crossed.

“I’m scared to walk there now. I won’t walk there again.”

Margaret said that several of their neighbours also had concerns: “It’s dangerous.

“A few years back we had a petition but they ignored it and said that it was too expensive.”

Raymond, who was also hit by a car a few years ago near the same spot, added: “It has knocked Dennis’s confidence.

“He used to like going out to walk the dog or buy sweets but he won’t now.

“I think it should be a priority and a new green man crossing should be at the top of the list. It’s near one of the biggest schools in the country.”

A Devon County Council spokesman said: “There has not been a history of collisions at this location and routes to the community college are well served by other crossings nearby. A survey of pedestrian movements will be necessary to establish if there is a case for investigating the provision of a pedestrian stage in the traffic signal arrangements at this junction.”

County councillor Bernard Hughes said: “I will raise this at the next Highways and Traffic Orders Committee to get a survey carried out and to try and get something done.”
