Around 130 fruit smoothies, made from Fairtrade bananas supplied by the Co-op and created using a “smoothie” bike, were sold.

The bike – specially adapted by Devon County Council – was set up by Exmouth Fairtrade next to the Co-op in the Magnolia Centre last Friday and over the weekend.

“Overall, we were very satisfied with the sales,” said Peter Brain, secretary of Exmouth Fairtrade.

Mr Brain thanked the Co-op for the free bananas and the Co-op movement for free vouchers, allowing them to purchase additional fruit.

The smoothie bike was one of a number of Exmouth Fairtrade’s initiatives during the promotional fortnight.

Other events included a schools conference, held at Beacon Primary School and attended by pupils from seven different local schools and Andrew Ball of the Fairtrade Global Centre.

“Sue Lockwood, headteacher at Beacon Primary, told us that it was very enjoyable and she’d be glad to host us another year,” said Mr Brain.

Another initiative involved several shops offering discounts on products marked with the Fairtrade logo.

“That was very welcome and we hope that will happen again,” said Mr Brain.
