Two local businessmen are hoping to beat the forces of nature and brew up some profits, after launching an online coffee business.

Simon Spiller, who co-owns Otterton Mill with wife Caroline, and David Tait, of Budleigh’s Hawkins Coffee, one of the largest coffee wholesalers in the region, teamed up after severe flooding of the River Otter last winter affected both their businesses.

Their new venture, Spiller & Tait, has now launched its first premium coffee product for retail exclusively on Amazon in the UK, with the online distribution model sidestepping any problems arising from floods.

Simon said: “After trade at our businesses was badly affected by extreme weather and flooding last winter, David and I decided to bring together our years of experience selling coffee to create an e-commerce business which would be flood proof.”

David said: “Our aim is to keep the Amazon warehouse stocked with about four weeks of supply. This ensures we can continue serving customers, even if our other businesses are closed or unreachable due to increasingly regular and extreme flood events in the South West.”
