Residents of East Budleigh will be able to put their neighbours in a spin, after voting for an outdoor table tennis table to be installed in the parish.

The table won a public vote on how Secton 106 money from developers should be spent on sport, beating a rival proposal for outdoor exercise equipment.

Polling was carried out by East Devon District Council and East Budleigh with Bicton Parish Council at the village’s recent scarecrow festival, and among pupils at Drake’s Primary School.

The results will now go to the parish council for ratification.

Parish council chairman Councillor Jennifer Ware said: “The whole event was most successful, and the parishioners were very enthusiastic to be given the opportunity to vote for their choice of sports equipment for the village.”

Councillor Iain Chubb, EDDC’s cabinet member for environment, said: “We are committed to making sure that local people have their say about where money from developments in their parish gets spent, and are one of the few local authorities that do so. Thank you to all the people that voted at the scarecrow festival. I look forward to seeing the table tennis table in use in the village.”

With the table, which received 58 per cent of the vote, costing £2,500, there will be £950 left over in the parish’s Section 106 pot, which will be available to spend in the future as more Section 106 money is accumulated.
