People in Budleigh can now keep fit in the sunshine after the opening of the town’s new £15,000 outdoor gym.

The free-to-use gym has been installed over two sites – The Green and Lime Kiln Car Park – having been voted for by residents as the best way to spend a Section 106 cash windfall from developers.

Having had the idea for a gym, the public was also asked to decide what sort of equipment they would like.

This has now been installed, after collaboration by East Devon District Council (EDDC), Budleigh Salterton Town Council, and healthcare professionals.

Councillor Tom Wright, EDDC’s deputy cabinet member for the environment and member of the town council working party, said: “This is an excellent free of charge facility for Budleigh Salterton, provided by Budleigh Salterton Town Council and EDDC working in partnership. Thank you to all the residents that came out and voted for the projects as well as those who put forward the idea originally”.

Mark McGlade of Home Instead, one of the healthcare professionals involved in the project, said: “The gym equipment is for everyone to enjoy, whether they are young or elderly. I’ve encountered people up to the age of 92 using the outdoor gym already!

“We are looking to organise a free exercise club for older people on the equipment. It’s important for the health and wellbeing of older people that they exercise and have fun at the same time.”

The money for the gym has come from a £35,000 section 106 budget available to the town overall.

The rest of the money is being spent on the scheme which came second in the vote, a cycle path across The Green, which EDDC says is being progressed.
