A TEENAGER from Ottery was among Devon’s most outstanding volunteers and cadets awarded the coveted HM Lord-Lieutenant’s Commendation for Meritorious Service.

Cadet Flight Sergeant Jacob Rosen, 17, was handed the accolade at a ceremony held at the County Hall in Exeter.

Jacob was one of four young people appointed as the Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets for the coming year.

As part of their role, they will accompany the Lord-Lieutenant, Mr Eric Dancer CBE JP, on his official engagements.

The individuals were chosen on their merits within the cadet force, but also for their dedication and work within the local community.

Jacob has been a cadet at the 1064 Honiton Squadron Air Training Corps (ATC) for more than five years, completing all his training classifications to a first rate standard.

He has achieved the ATC communications award and has a BTEC in aviation studies, music and public services.

In recognition of Jacob’s talent and commitment to his unit, he has been presented with the squadron’s “Best Cadet” award for two separate years.

Jacob intends to train as a civilian aircraft maintenance engineer but would like to join the Royal Air Force in the longer term and where possible continue to work as a youth development volunteer.

Brigadier Tony Dalby-Welsh, chief executive of the Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, said: “Each recipient of the Lord-Lieutenant’s Award is a credit to Devon and should be proud of their outstanding achievements. People like Jacob are excellent examples of the commendable contribution volunteers and cadets make to their local community. Without their efforts, it would be impossible to offer such a valuable service to our young people in the region.”
