A reinstated Otterton shop not should not be at the expense of existing community facilities, and could instead be sited on land behind the village hall.
A recent village poll showed overwhelming support for a new community-run shop – and there was some support for the facility to be housed in the village hall.
But the chairman of the village hall committee, James Pyne, says that reinstating a shop in the village should not mean losing an existing community amenity in the form of the hall’s committee room.
At a recent meeting of Ottterton village shop committee and the village hall committee, he said he could not understand why his original suggestion of using land behind the hall to house a shop had not been given further consideration by the group. The group says the committee room was a “last resort” in reinstating a shop.
Mr Pyne said: “The committee room was built as an impartial meeting place for the village and serves as a vital addition to the village hall.
“The fact that it acted as a dressing room for two recent successful village productions, conducts parish matters monthly and offers clubs and associations a valued area to conduct their matters demonstrates this.
“Losing this room would restrict the manner in which village matters are currently conducted, with a number of committees having to seek alternative venues for their discussions.”
