Roderick McMurdo, 51, of Exeter Road, was caught on CCTV cameras at Iceland in The Parade removing the meat and leaving the store without paying.

He was identified after police circulated CCTV images such as the one on this page.

The court heard that McMurdo, who is recovering from drug problems, had been in dispute with the store manager of Iceland a few weeks prior to the theft, when he was accused of shoplifting.

McMurdo’s annoyance at the accusation, which he denied, and the influence of alcohol, was said to have led to him taking the meat. At the time of the offence McMurdo was also subject to a conditional discharge for stealing bottles of spirits from Tesco in Salterton Road.

McMurdo told magistrates he was sorry for taking the meat, and pledged not to reoffend, saying: “I’m fairly convinced this will be the end of my stupidity.”

Magistrates handed McMurdo a six-month supervision order.
