Plans for a major new solar farm to be built between Woodbury and Lympstone have been opposed by Woodbury Parish Council.

The proposal is for a photovoltaic array at Coombe Farm, in Exe View Road, which would be operational for 25 years.

The plan is for panels to be fitted covering a 15-hectare (around 37 acres) area of the site.

Applicant Renewable Energy Systems says that following initial consultations with residents, the proposal has been significantly altered to minimise its visibility, however local councillors still have concerns.

Woodbury Parish Council voted to oppose the scheme, on the grounds that is was: “Totally alien to its setting of scenic beauty and great landscape value, and its ambience of peaceful rurality.”

Councillors were also concerned that planting high hedges to hide the panels would only increase the level of intrusion.

Woodbury and Lympstone district councillor Ben Ingham has also submitted an objection to the scheme, saying it would have: “… a highly detrimental effect on the environment.”

A final decision on planning permission will be made by East Devon District Council.
