Ollie wins 26k on Deal or no Deal

A retained firefighter from Topsham has walked away with £26,000 after he ‘beat the banker’ on Deal or No Deal.

Watched in the studio by his partner Jack, his parents and his sister, Ollie played what host Noel Edmonds described as a ‘perfect’ game, dealing at the highest amount offered to him by the show’s banker, having previously turned down the highest ever offer in the opening round.

Having taken £26,000, Ollie, who also works as a DJ, then removed the top £250,000 prize in what would have been the next round, and eventually found that he’d had just £500 in his box.

It was a long wait to appear on the show for Ollie, who first applied to take part three years ago, and admits that he had forgotten about it when, two years later, he was offered an audition.

Nearly a year after that, again after assuming he had been unsuccessful, Ollie was offered a place on the show.

He said: “The first show was pretty nerve wracking – I didn’t know the other contestants at that stage and only met Noel a minute before, but quickly started to get to know them. They put you up in a hotel and you spend two weeks or more with these people, and get to know how much the money means to them, and you want them to do well.”

Having been caught up in the nerves and excitement of the other contestants’ games while opening boxes, Ollie says that when his own game came around he was ‘surprisingly calm’.

“I thought ‘just enjoy it and go with the flow’ and luckily for me I had a good opening round.

“The banker said I was a triple threat, as firefighters win big money, I’d always had high numbers and I was a brilliant board reader, so he offered me £17,000, then upped it to £19,000.

“I was tempted to deal then, but because I’d given so much advice to people previously about how you’re only here once and need to embrace the opportunity, I thought it would be hypocritical to leave at that stage, so I went for it and luckily it paid off.”

During his game, Ollie told Noel how he has a daughter, Ruby Jean, with his previous girlfriend, who had allowed Ollie to end their relationship when he realised he was gay.

Ollie says he hopes to use his winnings to take Ruby Jean, now six years old, on a holiday to Florida, when she is older, and also as a deposit on a flat.
