Archant

Re: the mayor’s letter. I would be most grateful if you could print the following response to the letter in last week’s Journal, September 20, headed ‘Fuller picture’.

John Humphreys’ comments and his attack on Ron Roberts and signed off as Mayor of Exmouth in no way reflects the views and sentiments of Exmouth Town Council and his opinions are not shared by the Liberal Democrats on the town council.

We wish to disassociate ourselves from the remarks in his letter.

It would have been far better if Councillor John Humphreys had spoken as an individual councillor and not used his position as the mayor to try and make his personal view known.

Mr Roberts, when having had difficulty in speaking at town council meetings, has apologised, and explained that this is due to a medical condition.

Cllr Humphreys must have been aware of this, therefore his tirade shows intolerance and is inexcusable.

It is a pity that the mayor chooses to attack the person rather than to understand the aim Mr Roberts was trying to achieve.

Hopefully, in future, the mayor will choose his words more carefully before sending a statement to the press, which he has already read to the council and public when Mr Roberts was not present.

Councillor Steve Gazzard.

Liberal Democratic Group Leader,

Exmouth Town Council.
