New system battles voter fraud

14:55 13 June 2014

Exmouth residents are being urged to register to vote online.

Launched this week, the new online tool is part of a wider move to Individual Electoral Registration (IER), where the old and outdated household registration system is being replaced by individual registration.

It will help prevent potential fraud by enabling government to verify that everyone on the register is who they say they are.

Every year householders will be required to complete a household form, which will now be referred to as the household enquiry form (HEF).

From this month, any person who wants to register or make amendments to their current registration will be required to register individually and will need to provide their national insurance number and date of birth as identifying information. This information will then be verified against records held by the Department of Works and Pension before the Electoral Registration office can approve the application.

Please contact your Electoral Services office on 01395 517402 if you are unable to supply this information.

Remember, you can only vote in elections if your name is on the register of electors.

To register to vote online go to https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
