A new Otterton Shop in the village hall, could soon become a reality. Read this and more.

SHANDFORD: The annual fete at Abbeyfield Shandford, 31 Station Road, Budleigh Salterton, will be held on Saturday, August 18, at 2.30pm. The event is being run by the voluntary fundraising committee, and all the proceeds will go to the Shandford Residents’ Comfort Fund.

This fund is used to provide extra activities and comforts for residents, and to take them out on trips.

There will be stalls, a raffle and refreshments.

-----

HISTORIC CHURCHES: Parishioners are invited to walk part or all of an eight-mile walk around the five churches in the Raleigh Mission Community.

Sponsorship forms are available in the parish office and half of the money will go towards Devon Historic Churches and the rest will go towards the Raleigh Mission Community.

Reverend Anne Charlton said: “If you just want to do one section that is fine as well. Please bring a packed lunch, which we will hopefully have on the beach in the sunshine.”

Meet at the vicarage in East Budleigh at 9.30am.

-----

JUBILEE SURPLUS: Otterton’s jubilee group has suggested to the parish council that any surplus money be used on three projects. These are planting trees on land below Hayes, replacing a church bench on The Green with one commemorating the jubilee, and a reserve fund for future village events.

-----

CHILDREN’S SPORTS: The scout’s sports day, cancelled due to heavy rain during Gala Week has been rescheduled.

The event will now take place on the Green on Saturday, August 25, from 2pm and there will be various stalls and refreshments available.

Geoff Paver said: “As you know, Gala Week was very wet and we managed to re-schedule many events but the only one that was cancelled, and we couldn’t fit in, was the children’s sports.

“So, to support the Scout Association, can we have lots of children on the Green to take part in the sports day?”

-----

BOOK THERAPY: The first novel by a Budleigh Salterton psychotherapist-turned- author, Bring Down the Moon, by Eva Le Bon has been purchased in bulk by Devon Libraries Service for its ‘therapeutic’ effects.

She said: “Some of the libraries are starting to get the book in with a view to being in the general read romance and family saga section.”

However, some libraries have categorised it as ‘bibliotherapy’ and she added: “It is a book that is quite uplifting and lifts the spirits. The chief librarian in Budleigh said that the book had only just arrived and whizzed out straight away.”

-----

OTTERTON SHOP: A new Otterton Shop in the village hall, could soon become a reality.

The Village Shop Committee meet regularly and members attended a day’s workshop organised by Village SOS, a group that offers legal advice to community projects.

A committee member said: “It was pleasing to know that the failure rate of community shops is just three per cent so the committee feel that the project must be pursued as Otterton needs to have its village hub back.”
