A husband-and-wife team has taken over the reins at Budleigh Salterton Baptist Church – having had a longer journey than most to get there.

James and Julia Henley, who will be serving as joint ministers of the church, have moved to the town with 18-month-old daughter Katie, having previously served in Peru.

Julia said: “We already knew the church here, because we were linked with them and we had visited and talked about our work in Peru.

“We found we had lots of common ideas for the future with the elders of the church, and we decided it was right, it was what God wanted for us, and here we are.”

The couple were inducted with a service at St Peter’s Church, where Julia said everyone was very welcoming.

She added that visitors are welcome to Sunday services at their church in Little Knowle.

Their arrival follows the retirement of the Reverend Dr John Colwell after five years, with a cheese and wine party held in his honour to say farewell.

And he is quite sure that they will do a good job, having taught them at theological college and conducted their wedding and James’s ordination.

He said: “It was a wonderful coincidence that they returned from Peru at the same time I retired.”
