Devon In Sight has launched a new service providing specialist eye technique training for people with macular disease.

The charity is partnering with The Macular Disease Society to offer tuition in eccentric viewing and steady eye strategy techniques to those with the condition – the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK.

The practical techniques are taught on a one-to-one basis to help people to make the best use of their remaining peripheral vision, enabling them to complete tasks which they previously found extremely difficult.

People who take the course are likely to have to return for at least two sessions.

One of the people delivering the training will be Devon in Sight volunteer Tina Caswell, who herself has macular disease.

She said: “Those affected by this debilitating condition can find everyday tasks such as cooking, walking, reading, watching television and even recognising the faces of others very difficult, if not impossible.

“It can be an isolating disease and we are hoping that the training sessions will make a real difference to people’s lives.”

The Macular Disease Society’s Cleon Hutton said: “I’m so pleased that by partnering with Devon In Sight we can offer this training to local people.

“These techniques have the ability to be a great help to those affected by macular disease. This is a great chance for people to learn a new skill that can help them in their daily lives.”

Sessions will be available every Wednesday between 10am and 4pm at Devon in Sight’s resource centre in Holman Way.

To book a place or to find out more information contact the charity on 01392 876666.

Devon In Sight has also announced that it will be recruiting some additional members of staff to its team.

The charity says these employees will help develop its funding strategy, to ensure that they are in a strong position to further develop and expand their services across Devon.

They will also be recruiting an outreach and activities worker, who will be working to develop and deliver the programme of road shows and exhibitions across the county, and activities and training events from Topsham and elsewhere.
