An Exmouth café has proved itself the cream of the crop, after being named as one of the very best eateries in the UK.

Bumble and Bee, in the Manor Gardens, is up for a prestigious Golden Fork Award at the Great Taste Awards in London, having been named as one of the top 50 entrants from 10,000 entries nationwide.

The café has received the recognition for its cream teas, after Debra Quine, who runs the café with husband Toby, and baker Emily Doyle won through a nerve-wracking, Masterchef-style audition.

Debra said: “It’s unbelievable. For our humble Devon cream teas to be recognised on a national level is pretty amazing.

“It will be good for Exmouth. Even if we don’t win an award, we have been shortlisted, and Exmouth will become a destination for Bumble and Bee cream teas.”

The café, which earlier this year won the Best Customer Service award at the Journal-backed Exmouth Business Awards, made the Golden Fork Award final 50, having first been named as one of only 153 entrants to receive a coveted three-star award from Great Taste.

For their audition, Debra and Emily had to cook for a panel of judges made up of top food critics, who then asked Debra questions about the food and the business.

Debra said: “You walk in and it’s just like the Masterchef studio, with an open-plan kitchen.

“You had the judges sitting there watching your every move. We were shaking when we went in, but once we started we had to get the job done, and we put our heads down and concentrated.

“We were really relieved when we saw the scones had risen.”

Debra says the judges were particularly impressed with Bumble and Bees’ locally-sourced ingredients, including Exmouth honey.

The final is being held on September 8 and will have some of the top names in food and drink among the 350 guests.
