Nail in the coffin

Dear Mr Swire MP. Just when David Cameron appears to have wrong-footed the UKIP’s meteoric rise in the polls, you are in the process of shooting yourselves in the foot this week with your Same Sex Marriage Bill.

You will have heard all the arguments against you in this East Devon constituency to which you have feebly responded with the word homophobic; suffice it to say this will come back to haunt you in the future; 2015 to be precise!

Even though you may live to see another day in opposition, David Cameron certainly will not, as a direct result of this Bill, I believe.

In the out-of-touch world you now inhabit, you have misjudged the electorate badly and in their frustration they will punish you. How sad for the country that a worse fate awaits us when Labour gets back in next time around: this wonderful country of ours will not take much more battering which the past 40 years of inept politicians has inflicted on it. The Conservatives at least offered us the better of two evils but now there’s nothing between the two parties; they’re both bad now.

In your obsession with Equality and European PC, you are throwing away our traditional values and everything my parents fought for (both still alive in their 90s) and my grandparents, nearly one hundred years ago in 1914. My grandfather on my mother’s side was a very senior army officer and deputy director general of demobilisation at the end of the Second World War in Whitehall; his career had spanned 1914 to 1946, from the trenches of the First World War to Northern Ireland in the 1920s and to Burma in the Second World War when the Japanese invaded and thence to Whitehall. He once said to me when I was a young man: “Politicians are the lowest of the low. They are not to be trusted”. It has taken me all these years to see this for myself and it doesn’t fill me with any sense of pleasure.

I still live in a rather naive world in the hope that somehow our elected leaders will do the right thing for our country but your actions this week with this insane Bill will probably put the final nail in that coffin.
