Police have cracked down on speeding in Topsham as part of an ongoing road safety operation.

Following concerns raised by residents, officers carried out a number of speed checks on Exeter Road.

Nearly 30 drivers were stopped for exceeding the limit during the four-hour session, carried out in partnership with the fire service, with 54mph the highest recorded speed.

Ten on-the-spot fixed penalty tickets were issued and all stopped drivers were asked to view a road safety awareness video developed by the fire service, which demonstrates the consequences of driving at high speed.

PC Steve Parsons said: “We are focusing on cutting down on the number of road traffic accidents and fatalities which can be avoided if drivers abide by the speed limits given.”

PC Parsons added that more anti-speeding operations are planned during the busy summer period.
