Miss Devon finalist to bathe in beans for charity

A Budleigh beauty queen is hoping that beans means cash as she prepares for the final of the 2014 Miss Devon competition.

Hayley Wood, 21, of Marine Parade, will be appearing at the final in Torquay on April 19, but in advance of this has to raise money for her chosen charity.

Hayley, who is studying psychology at Swansea University, is therefore fundraising for the Eve Appeal, and to this end is holding two charity events at The Salterton Arms, where she works when back in Devon.

One of these is a ‘pink evening’, which will be held at the pub on Saturday from around 7pm, at which guests will be invited to wear pink, and there will be a raffle, karaoke and disco.

Preceding this, Hayley is hoping to step into a bath of baked beans, which will be filled by cans sponsored by visitors to the pub.

She said: “I’m a bit scared it’s going to be cold! I did say to my boss could we heat the beans first, but we’re not going to do that.”

To raise even more money, Hayley is planning a ‘date auction’ at her university, where single students will be auctioned off.

Hayley is currently combining her fundraising with her studies, for which she is currently writing her second dissertation, and preparing for the Miss Devon final itself, where, if successful, she could qualify for the finals of Miss England.

She said: “I’ve never done anything like this before. I am really excited about it.”
