A Budleigh beauty queen has raised more than £1,000 for charity after taking a dip in a bath of beans.

Hayley Wood, 21, who lives in Marine Parade, is a finalist in Miss Devon, and as part of the competition is raising money for women’s cancer charity The Eve Appeal.

To do this, she held a day of fundraising at the Salterton Arms, where she works, and as promised this included getting into a bath filled with baked beans.

Having originally planned to just take a quick dip, Hayley ended up spending two hours in the tub, having seen the effect it was having on her fundraising.

She said: “I was planning on just going in and out but when I got in people started giving me money so I thought I would stay in as long as I could.”

Having rushed home and got cleaned up, Hayley then returned to the pub for her second event – a fundraising ‘pink evening’ with a raffle.

She said: “It was fantastic, the local support was amazing. All evening people were coming in, and it was a really busy night. The pub was packed.”

In total, Hayley managed to raise £1,105 through her efforts, including one £500 donation from a regular customer.

Hayley said: “He said he liked what I was doing and wanted to support me as much as he could.”

The customer, who asked to remain anonymous, said he was keeping a promise he had made to support Hayley and The Eve Appeal.

Hayley said she would like to thank all the local businesses who donated raffle prizes, Salterton Arms landlord Nick Stiling for allowing her to use the pub, and everyone who donated.

With her fundraising complete, Hayley is now preparing for the Miss Devon final in Torquay on April 19 – at the same time as completing her second dissertation for her psychology degree at the University of Swansea.
