A transplant survivor who runs an Exmouth pub has raised almost a £1,000 for charity by swimming a mile - despite having only one lung.

Alison Brockbank, who runs the Bicton Inn and lost a lung to cancer 12 years ago, was joined by friend Jacquie Olnstee and supported by town crier Roger Bourgein and Alison’s daughter Zoe Brockbank.

The pair swam 64 lengths of Exmouth’s Leisure Centre pool to support mum of three Sarah Wright, 37, who is seriously ill and needs two new lungs.

Sarah’s 10-year-old son Harry recently organised a sponsored cycle event from Exmouth to Darts Farm to raise funds for the British Lung Foundation and awareness for the cause.

Alison also wanted to raise awareness of the need for people to sign up to the organ donor register.

It follows the 24-hour music marathon, ‘Music for Lungs’, which was held at the pub.

She said: “It was tough but I wanted to set myself a challenge.

“I just wanted to do something to support Sarah and the efforts of her family.”

Sarah’s dad, Steve Gazzard, said: “We appreciate the efforts people have gone to, it means a lot to Sarah and my family.”
