Police are urging Exmouth’s traders and businesses to sign up to community messaging after the scheme proved successful at cracking down on theft in the town.

Exmouth police have praised the force community messaging service after three women were arrested in connection with allegations of theft.

Devon and Cornwall police last week received a community message from town centre jeweler Paul Ashby-Crane, reporting a group of women acting suspiciously in his Magnolia Centre shop.

Police HQ immediately alerted the Exmouth neighbourhood police team on foot patrol in the town.

Police community support officer Malcolm Maguire, who was moments away from the area, said three women arrested on suspicion of theft from a shop in Rolle Street are helping police with enquiries.

The PCSO urged businesses and traders to sign up to the scheme.

PCSO Maguire said: “Community messaging is a powerful tool and has once again proved highly effective as an early warning system to prevent and detect crime.

“Without this information we wouldn’t have got there so quickly.”
