An Exmouth man has come closer to Olympic gold than most – after being a medal bearer at the London 2012 games.

Will Murley, 24, of Exeter Road, was one of the Olympic ‘games maker’ volunteers, and was chosen to carry gold medals at the women’s and men’s football finals.

This meant he appeared in front of more than 80,000 people in Wembley Stadium, and millions watching on television, carrying the medals out for dignitaries to present to the winning teams.

The women’s final saw the United States beat Japan 2-1, while the men’s final saw Mexico beat Brazil by the same score.

Will said: “Before I did it I thought it would be a doddle, but then I was standing in the tunnel with five minutes left of the game, and we couldn’t see it but we could hear it, because the noise bounces around in the stadium.

“Then you go out of the tunnel and the noise just hits you, floor to ceiling. I just thought ‘this is amazing’.

“There were so many cameras going off, then we turned and there was a wall of media and press taking photos.

“It was awesome, and to be able to get that close to gold medals was seriously cool.”

During the women’s final, some of Will’s medals were presented by FIFA president Sepp Blatter – whose appearance didn’t go down well with the crowd.

Will said: “While Sepp Blatter took the gold medals off me, he was being booed by 84,000 people in the stadium, which is why I was laughing on the television!

“I was getting excited before the men’s final because Pele was there, but he didn’t go out for the ceremony – I reckon if Brazil had won he would have been on the pitch as well.”

Will also got to see inside the Olympic Stadium itself when, as a games maker, he attended rehearsals for the opening ceremony, and said the whole Olympics had been “inspiring”.
