A new £15,000 Maer play area, redesigned by children of St Joseph’s School was unveiled last week.

The cash came from developers, and East Devon District Council asked the nearest school, St Josephs Primary School, to see if they would like to contribute.

Year five and six children were asked how they would like to improve it, and the improvements called for were monkey bars, a wobbly bridge, climbing netting over a low, long wooden triangle, a balance beam, stepping logs, a see saw tunnel.

The reopening of the area was by mayor John Humphreys, deputy mayor Bill Nash and councillor Alison Greenhalgh.

Councillor Humphreys said; “For the school children it’s a great learning experience in civic engagement and for us it’s great to know that our young people have made an investment in the future of the town.

“Who knows, in future years they might be bringing their own children here to play on the equipment they helped develop.

“This has been an example of great team work.

“These youngsters have worked with the town and district council and officers and with the design company to make this come about.”

“It is great to see that happening.”
