Archant

A team of volunteers worked up to eight hours to put up the new Budleigh Salterton Christmas lights on Sunday night.

The team finished past midnight, with many businesses adding Christmas trees to brackets outside their premises supplied by the chamber of commerce.

More than a dozen strings of new lights have been purchased at a cost of over £5,000 following a series of fundraising events.

Backed by the police, more than 24 volunteers toiled hard to bring the town its Christmas sparkle.

The following day a well-earned mid-morning full English breakfast was enjoyed at the Feathers, kindly prepared by Joan Salt and her staff and sponsored by Simon Blisset of Premier Cafe.

Chamber president Alan Tilbury praised the “wonderful community spirit” that had prevailed and thanked everyone for their hard work.

Chamber chairman Christine Bentley added: “It was hard work but the new lights looked great. People in Budleigh are thrilled.”
