The first ‘male issues only’ therapy group in Exmouth is set to start this September at the Quiet Mind Centre.
Qualified clinical hypnotherapist, bereavement councillor and psychotherapist-in-training John Paradise will run the group on a non-profit basis with a small contribution required with up to eight clients per session.
He said: “As a male psychotherapist I have noticed through working with male clients that there is no male orientated therapy dealing solely with male issues.
“There are often unique pressures on men and I want to help men of all ages learn that often they are not alone in how they may be feeing or experiencing life.”
He said that his work highlighted an unmet need, which has prompted him to start a therapy group for men.
“Men often have difficulty in identifying or sharing their emotions, in part due to how society views boys and men, and expects them to behave and partly how we are raised,” he said.
“This disconnection between thinking and feeling can underpin a range of problems for men in their own mental health or relationships.
“Group therapy would be suitable for a range of problems.”
He said problems could include men who are separated from their children, low self esteem, depression, anxiety, anger, post-traumatic stress disorder, abuse, and problems in relationships or general dissatisfaction in life.
“Group therapy offers a confidential, safe place to share and discuss problems the person is currently facing in their life, led by a psychotherapist.
“There are additional benefits to group therapy that individual therapy cannot offer, such as sharing concerns with other men who may be experiencing similar issues and so the client recognises that they are not on their own and they have an opportunity to use others’ experiences as a resource.”
The group will meet between 6pm and 7.30pm on a weekday evening at the Quiet Mind Centre from late September.
The cost will be £10 for each 90- minute session.
