Exmouth has pulled together to hold a fundraising day for the family of Sarah Jayne skipper Geoff Ingram, whose body was recovered from the wreck of his fishing vessel which sank off Berry Head earlier this month.

Geoff Ingram’s family has been at the forethought of everyone’s mind when hope began fading the skipper of sunken trawler Sarah Jayne would be found safe and well.

Determined to show its support for Geoff – who Exmouth’s fishing community are convinced sacrificed his own life to save his crew by going back into the capsized vessel to activate a distress alert - the town has been showing its love and support for the skipper’s family by donating money.

A fundraising day has been planned in Geoff’s honour at the Manor Gardens on Saturday September 29 from 11am until 6pm, where it is hoped further funds will be raised for the skipper’s family.

Exmouth is being asked to pay tribute to Geoff’s selfless actions by showing its support for the day by taking part.

To make the day a success a host of stalls are needed. All are invited along to sell unwanted items, bric-a-brac, books, cakes, clothes – as long as a donation from the proceeds of the sale are donated to the fund.

Entertainment is also needed and the organisers are keen to hear from anyone willing to help with live music, bouncy castles, face painting, circus skills, games or any other fun activities. Dance groups, or local clubs are also invited to perform with demonstrations.

Traditional fair food, such as toffee apples and candy floss, plus catering vans to feed the expected crowds, are also required.

The organisers are keen to put on a fun-filled day. Anyone can take part providing a donation is made to the fund.

Prizes are also needed for a raffle, which will further boost funds. It is hoped local businesses and individuals will give generously.

Organiser Louise Higgins said the escalating generosity of the town had been ‘overwhelming’: “It’s just phenomenal, this community spirit. The whole town want to get behind it.

“People feel helpless and need to do something. Donating money is helping.”
