A section of the M5 is to remain closed throughout this afternoon (Friday) and into the evening following a fatal incident.

The motorway has been closed in both directions between junction 26 for Wellington and junction 25 for Taunton following the incident at 6.20am this morning.

An update from Avon and Somerset Police confirmed one person died in the incident, while another two are receiving treatment in hospital for serious injuries.

The statement added: “We appreciate the disruption this will cause but we’re currently dealing with a complex scene.

“We would urge people to avoid the area if possible and thank the public for their patience and understanding.”

Highways England is advising drivers to consider delaying their journeys or use alternative routes.

Northbound traffic is advised to exit the M5 at junction 26 and follow the solid black triangle diversion symbol. Take the A38 northbound and re-join the M5 at junction 25.

Southbound traffic is advised to exit the M5 at junction 25 and follow the solid black square diversion symbol. Take the A358 east through West Hatch. At Horton Cross, take the A303 southbound through Newcott and then the A30 towards Honiton. Re-join the M5 at junction 29.

Northbound traffic coming from further south may wish to exit the M5 at junction 29 and head north using the A30 as an alternative.
