A former Exmouth Community College pupil is forging ahead with ambition to become a Royal Navy warfare officer.

Lucy O’Callaghan, 22, has successfully completed the initial phase of officer training at Britannia Royal Naval College, in Dartmouth.

Sub Lieutenant O’Callaghan, who joined the Royal Navy in May 2011 after graduating from the University of Chester with an honours degree in biology and sport and exercise science, now starts the initial warfare officer foundation course. She will continue to develop her navigation and maritime skills.

Lucy said: “I wanted a career that would continuously challenge me and satisfy my adventurous nature.

“The training has given me a great sense of achievement and I’m really looking forward to my future career.”

Lucy’s mother, Bridget O’Callaghan travelled to Dartmouth to watch her daughter in the passing-out parade, where the salute was taken by Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, The First Sea Lord.

As part of her training, Lucy spent 10 weeks at sea onboard HMS Albion, operating mainly in UK waters.
