A sky-diving disabled Littleham granddad is campaigning for a crossing on a mile-long stretch of road which some consider so dangerous, they say just getting from one side to another is a lottery.

Geoff Roberts, 82, of Capel Lane, recently jumped out of an aeroplane for charity at speeds of 140mph.

But on terra firma he finds movement a lot more problematic because he is blighted with arthritis of the spine.

He says he has been calling for a crossing anywhere along Littleham Road for years, a stretch of road so busy during the summer months he says that crossing safely is almost impossible.

He lives near the Bidmead Centre, an area crammed packed with bungalows and housing for the elderly and disabled.

He said: “I just can’t believe that a mile-long stretch of road doesn’t have a single crossing anywhere.

“There are elderly people who live here and a school and the only chance you have to cross safely is when the school crossing patroller is there.

“We have been asking for a crossing for years and nothing has happened. All we are asking for is a bit of paint on the road.”

He says that hundreds of cars drive to and from Sandy Bay everyday during the summer months.

“We just feel that nobody cares and that people are so concerned about not upsetting the holidaymakers nothing ever gets done.

“I’m not a habitual complainer. I can walk, but slowly, and when you cross you just have to take a chance and hope for the best that nobody is going to hit you.”

Councillor Eileen Wragg, the county councillor for Exmouth and Littleham, said she would see the problems for herself and lobby county highways chiefs to add a crossing.
