Archant

Literature fans have enjoyed the company of top writers at Salem Chapel’s inaugural Literary Weekend.

The event at the historic East Budleigh chapel featured a children’s writing workshop, an evening with romantic novelists, and an afternoon with local writers and their friends.

East Budleigh novelist Rosemary A Smith, who organised the event, said: “We had an extremely successful weekend.

“I think the stars of the show were the identical twins from Cardiff, Cathryn and Lynsey, who write as CL Raven. [Exmouth author] Graham Hurley said they were ‘priceless’.

“But everyone was wonderful, and gave such great contributions. The many people in the audience loved it.”

In the children’s workshop, youngsters took part in a quiz, and colouring and story writing competitions.

All the children took home a book, and all the winners received certificates, and Milly Tew, named as overall winner of the story writing competition, received a £10 book token.

The romantic novelists evening saw Kate Furnivall, Anne Goring, Linda Mitchelmore and Exmouth author Margaret James talking about how they started out, and their writing careers.

Then on Sunday afternoon more than 40 people turned out to hear local authors Graham Hurley and Mal Peet, and listen to local poet John Payne read out some of his work.

The audience also listened to Audery Walker reading excerpts from festival organiser Rosemary’s book Love in the Mist, set in Budleigh Salterton, and were left in stitches by CL Raven when they told their story of how they got to East Budleigh, and the antics they get up to researching their books, as well as reading excerpts from their latest book.
