Molly and David Pratt of the East Budleigh Bell Ringers Appeal receive a cheque for £1,264.50 from members of Budleigh Salterton Lions Club.

The bells in East Budleigh are set to ring out for generations to come, after the ‘overwhelming’ success of an appeal by the village’s bell ringers.

The ringers set out last year to raise more than £40,000 to overhaul the bells at All Saints Church, expecting it to take several years to raise the money.

However, support for the appeal has been so enthusiastic that after just nine months the ringers have virtually reached their target.

Bell ringers captain David Pratt said: “We are very pleased with the people that have donated – they have been exceptional.

“We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the public.”

The latest donation to the appeal was £1,264.50 from Budleigh Salterton Lions Club, raised through a jumble sale.

David said: “It was very good of the Lions – they said it was the most they’d ever made from a jumble sale.”

With the money raised, the work on the bells can now begin, with three bells due to be cast at John Taylor and Co in Leicester, on September 10.

Initial works will then be carried out at the church, with the main work beginning after the church’s last wedding of the year in November.

The work should allow the bells to keep ringing in the village for another 100 years.

David has organised a coach trip to see the bells being cast, for which there are a few places left. For more information, call him on 01395 443708.
