Let’s shop small

PUBLISHED: 13:24 24 February 2012

I haVE written quite a few letters to The Journal over the years and may have been rather critical of Exmouth, its general dullness, a lack of any real moving forward with poorish facilities for a town of its size, along with one of the biggest community colleges in the country.

However, a couple of years ago, I designed a poster for my car saying ‘SAVE TOWNS – SHOP SMALL’ and even interested a few traders both here and in Tiverton, as I fully realise that Exmouth has a very useful and extensive range of smaller, independent shops.

I counted around 40 that I use quite regularly, and I will use these in preference to the bigger name stores whose stocks can be limited, the advice often given to use the bigger branches up in Exeter. Not a good thing. Exeter is a fine city, but its bias, at present, is largely high-end fashion - and this is not a moneyed part of England.

I do feel that Exmouth’s smaller shops with individual service are an asset which is not being sufficiently publicised.

Exeter Road had a noble stab at it, but Exmouth, with its odd and quirky corners, needs a more integrated concept. Again, as with so many things in the town, it is imagination which is sadly lacking.

Put it this way. How many people living in the Exmouth area have combed the numerous, larger commercial outlets in the South West in search of that special Christmas present, only to return to home turf to find what you want right here. Save petrol, save towns, shop small!
