The last summer sun saved the day for Otterton Garden Club.

The village hall was full of colour thanks to all the cut blooms, which came through the wet summer with a sudden flourish for the show. Les Packer, a new member to the club, won both dahlia classes with stunningly large blooms.

Diane Payne and Suzanne Smith battled it out in the cut blooms classes, with Suzanne taking the Bennett Cup and Diane taking the Jenner Cup for best exhibit.

Charles Townshend ran away with all the trophies in the fruit classes with first places in the dessert apples, culinary apples, blackberries and raspberries.

The home produce classes brought “oohs” and “aahs” from the judge with the men’s rocky road chocolate bars gaining the greatest praise; Eric Paver took first with Terry Tibbott second. The three lemon biscuits by Nina Locke and the apple cake by Beryl Millington were particular favourites of the club chairman Roland (Ro) Smith who likes to verify the judges’ findings.
